by-zoe

Four concepts, built on the two things Round 1 settled: the clay colour and the typeface. Every mark on this page uses the same type and the same palette, so the only thing being compared is the construction itself — how the space between "by" and "zoe" is drawn. The four are shown equally; none is a lead option.

01

The constants

Carried through every concept below.

Aa Zz 123
A semibold geometric grotesque with tight tracking — the typeface from Round 1's Concept 5, now applied to every mark.
Clay · C4502F
Cream · F6EFE7
Ink · 16150F
Green · 0E3B2E

The clay-led palette: clay carries the accent in every mark, cream and ink are the working backgrounds, green is available as a supporting colour.

02

Concept A · The Wordmark

The one-line mark, with the hyphen as typed — set in clay.

Concept A

The Wordmark

The name on one line, nothing added. The hyphen keeps its natural typed proportions and carries the clay. The quietest of the four constructions.

03

Concept B · The Dash

The one-line mark with the hyphen redrawn as a longer clay dash.

Concept B

The Dash

The hyphen becomes a drawn mark rather than a typed character, so its length, thickness and colour are controlled exactly. Sits between A's quietness and the more graphic constructions.

Concept B · Lengths

Dash length

Two lengths shown — one close to a natural hyphen, one more drawn-out. Because the dash is drawn, any length in between is available; this is a dial, not a binary.

04

Concept C · The Fraction

The name stacked, with the hyphen rotated into a fraction bar. Three ways to build it.

Concept C · Centred

Centred

Both words at the same size, centred on the bar. The construction from Round 1, reset in the new type. Naturally square, so it also crops to profile pictures and favicons.

Concept C · Offset

Offset

A true fraction's proportions — smaller "by" above, larger "zoe" below, left-aligned, with the bar locked to the width of "zoe" so the lockup scales consistently.

Concept C · Tile

Tile

The fraction contained in a rounded square — shown in ink with the clay version alongside. The contained format is the one that translates directly to app icons and avatars.

05

Concept D · The Slash

The one-line mark with the hyphen tilted into a division slash. Two ways to set it.

Concept D · Level

The Slash

The clay mark drawn as a slash — fraction notation kept on a single line, both words on the same baseline. The slash can also be used on its own as a graphic element.

Concept D · Stepped

The Stepped Slash

The same slash with the words stepped — "by" raised, "zoe" dropped, the way a typesetter draws a fraction on one line. More movement than the level version.
